Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP's Fabio Quartararo and Álex Rins, although keen to impress at the Monster Energy British Grand Prix, missed out on securing direct places in tomorrow’s Q2, finishing this afternoon’s Practice in 16th and 18th place respectively.
Silverstone (UK), 2nd August 2024
The Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team kicked off the second half of the 2024 MotoGP season today at the Silverstone circuit. Fabio Quartararo and Álex Rins were pushing hard in the final stages of this afternoon's Practice, but missed out on securing a place in tomorrow's Q2, finishing the session in 16th and 18th place respectively.

Quartararo used this morning's 45-minute-long Free Practice 1 to get back into the groove after the three-week summer break. Despite being held up by another rider on his fastest lap, he finished the session in ninth place, giving him confidence. In the 60-minute afternoon Practice session, he held a provisional top-10 place again in the early stages but struggled to hold on to it. His best attempt, a 1'59.273s, set on lap 20/21, put him in 16th place, 1.362s from first.

Rins was keen to return to riding the M1 in the FP1 session. Gradually building up his pace, he secured 15th place. In the afternoon Practice session, the Spaniard was pushing early on, inching close to the top 10. However, the pace quickened in the final ten minutes. The number-42 rider responded by posting a 1'59.455s on lap 13/16 and was pushing for more, but a crash in Turn 7 on his last lap ended his chances of improving. He ended the session in 18th position, 1.544s from the top of the rankings.

MotoGP will be back in action for FP2, held tomorrow from 10:10 - 10:40 (GMT +1). The qualifying sessions will follow from 10:50 - 11:30, and the 10-lap Sprint will start at 15:00.

It's great to be back in action again, but we had hoped for better results. The lack of grip really influenced how our bike behaves. This is disappointing, but we are confident that for tomorrow we will be able to improve this issue.

We are far off Q2. I expected much more from the bike improvement we brought to this race weekend. Unfortunately, it wasn't like we expected, and we have to analyse it and try to make a step for tomorrow. The feeling with the bike is not really great, so we'll work on that and try to be closer to the others. Anyway, I think it would be good to do more laps and gather more feedback to try to bring this bike to its absolute limit.

During the whole day we have done a good job with the set-up, and we have improved constantly, especially during the last part of the Practice, and I felt that we were quite competitive. I've worked super hard to be back here at the British GP, and I was eager to jump on the bike again after the surgery and missing the German GP. But to be honest, I experienced more pain than I was expecting in the wrist after doing so many laps today. So now I'll have to go to my physio to do some recovery sessions and evaluate my condition.
