But, having failed to complete a double long-lap penalty, he was handed a post-race penalty of 9s, putting him 21st in the classifications.
Montmeló (Catalunya), 17th November 2024
The Solidarity Grand Prix of Barcelona, the 2024 showdown, was a challenge for the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team. Fabio Quartararo and Álex Rins wanted to sign off in the best way possible but couldn't make the progress they had hoped for in today's Race. Quartararo ended his 2024 campaign with an 11th place at the chequered flag. Rins crossed the finish line in 20th, but a 9s post-race penalty moved him to 21st in the Race results.
Quartararo began the final race from P10 and settled into 12th position on lap 3 after some back and forth with various rivals. On lap 6, El Diablo got up to speed and got an overtake in on Joan Mir. He then started to close the over 2s gap to Marco Bezzecchi and gradually narrowed it down. He was less than 0.3s behind Bezzecchi and Pedro Acosta, who were battling for ninth place, as they started the final lap. The Yamaha man kept gaining on them, but he came just short. He finished 0.138s behind Acosta, in 11th place, 10.756s from the winner.
Rins had a good start from P15 and climbed as high as 11th in the early stages, but the busy mid-pack tussle had him fall back to his original starting position by the second lap. He struggled to fend off rivals and dropped further down the rankings. For most of the 24 laps he circulated in 20th place. To make matter worse, with 6 laps to go he received a long-lap penalty for taking a shortcut at Turn 2. He opted to keep his head down and keep racing as usual. He held 20th across the finish line, 30.138s from first. However, having received a double long-lap penalty for failing to comply with the earlier long-lap penalty, and not having completed the double one either, he was given a 9s post-race penalty in total that put him in 21st place in the classifications.
Today's results see Quartararo keep 13th place in the final standings with 113 points. Rins remains in joint-18th position with 31 points. Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP stay in 8th place in the team championship with 144 points, and Yamaha hold on to 4th position in the constructor's championship with 124 points.

We tried the hard tyre, which we never tried during the weekend, but I had nothing to lose and only good information to gain. I think it was the correct choice, but we did lack grip. We know what we need to improve, but I do think I did one of my best races. We finished only 10s from the top, even if my position isn't super good. I think that we can be happy with the race we did.

Overall, we didn't finish the season in the best way. I struggled from the first to the last lap. I couldn't be competitive. I was trying some things whilst riding, but it didn't matter. The same problems remained. We couldn't find a good set-up here, which is a big shame, especially coming from Sepang where we were feeling better with the bike. Let's see what we can do on Tuesday when we start work for the new season. We have some new items to test but, for sure, a big priority for us is also to find a good set-up so we can test these new items in a proper way.
Overall, the Solidarity GP has been a difficult round for us, but there are some silver linings. If we compare the gap to first in today's Race with the gap to first at the Catalan GP Race, we have halved the distance, which is showing promise. The same can be said about yesterday's Sprint, so in general, the gap to the front has gotten smaller in the last few rounds of the year. It was unfortunate that Fabio got stuck behind Mir in the beginning, which compelled him to stay in the second group. The gap to Bezzecchi was pretty big, but he was able to make up 2 seconds. In the end, the Race was maybe 1 lap too short for him to be able to really join the battle for ninth. All in all, Álex had a day to forget. We will analyse today's data to understand what didn't work and prohibited him from riding like he wanted to. We want to close this season and immediately start thinking about 2025 with our new colleagues.
