This weekend Remy Gardner will spearhead the Yamaha Factory Racing Team as a wild-card rider at Round 16 of the 2024 FIM MotoGP World Championship, held at the Mobility Resort Motegi. His main aim for this weekend is to work on prototype parts analysis in a premier class race setting.
Mobility Resort Motegi (Japan), 2nd October 2024
Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. appointed Remy Gardner as a wild-card entry for this weekend's Grand Prix of Japan, Round 16 of the 2024 FIM MotoGP World Championship. The Australian will be riding the Yamaha Factory Racing Team YZR-M1 (with Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP livery) at the Mobility Resort Motegi this race weekend with the aim to test various prototype parts in a MotoGP race setting and accelerate bike development.

Despite his busy WorldSBK schedule, Gardner already gained experience on the Yamaha YZR-M1 when he participated in the 2024 German GP and British GP, making him the ideal choice in Japan for the Yamaha Factory Racing Team's second MotoGP wild-card entry this season.

Moreover, Gardner is certainly no stranger to the Motegi track. He has ridden at the circuit six times: once in the MotoGP premier class as a regular rider in 2022, four times in the Moto2 class from 2016-2019, and once in the Moto3 class in 2015.

The Motegi circuit was built in 1997 for test purposes. It was first visited by MotoGP for the Japanese Grand Prix in 1999. A year later the track hosted the Pacific Grand Prix, and it has remained a major attraction for motorsports fans ever since. In 2004 Motegi replaced the Suzuka Circuit on the MotoGP calendar to become the host of the Japanese Grand Prix once again, and it has kept this status ever since. The 4.8km track is known for setting the scene for lots of memorable and exciting racing moments thanks to its challenging layout of six left and eight right corners and various hard-braking and acceleration areas.

Today (Oct 2nd), Gardner joined Fabio Quartararo and Álex Rins during their visit to Yamaha's Innovation Centre and E-Ride Base, and Yamaha Corporation's brand new interactive store at Minato Mirai, Yokohama, Japan. The employees' enthusiasm was infectious. The trip added excitement to the upcoming Yamaha home GP both for the riders and the hard-working Yamaha employees.

The Grand Prix of Japan is held in the GMT +9 time zone. FP1 will take place on Friday from 10:45 - 11:30 local track time and Practice will be held from 15:00 - 16:00. On Saturday, FP2 will be held from 10:10 - 10:40, and the qualifying sessions from 10:50 - 11:30, followed by the 12 lap Sprint at 15:00. On Sunday, Warm Up is held from 09:40 - 09:50 and the 24-lap Race starts at 14:00.

We are very pleased to have this wild-card entry in the Japanese GP. Yamaha's mission is to accelerate bike development and to return to winning form. This wild card is in line with the overall objective: we aim to collect as much useful data as possible to support the current Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP riders as well as the new team and riders that will join Yamaha in 2025. Remy Gardner is already familiar with the 2024 YZR-M1 and the Yamaha Factory Racing Team as well as the Motegi track, so we are confident that it will be a smooth partnership this weekend.

I am looking forward to racing in Motegi this weekend. It's a cool track and always one I enjoyed riding during my time in the Grand Prix paddock previously. Riding in Japan for a Japanese manufacturer will be really special, especially in front of the home fans as it's always a great atmosphere. It’s been a few races since I rode the YZR-M1, so I am keen to get back on the bike and provide as much data as possible for Yamaha as they look to develop the bike further, it's been really encouraging to see the stronger results for the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team in recent races, so hopefully we can have a good weekend and get stuck in!

It was also a great experience to visit Yamaha's Innovation Centre, E-Ride Base, and Yamaha Music. I love music and have played guitar for quite a few years, so it was nice to visit this side of Yamaha and meet the all the staff there as that's something completely new for me!
